Boytsov M. (PhD, Prof., Higher School of Economics, Moscow) e-mail: email@example.com Symbolic Plurality and Symbolic Unity. Representation of empire by means of iconography and political ceremonies. P. 190-194.
The article studies the image of a ‘composite empire’ that outlived the Romans and was inherited by Carolingian and Ottonian iconography.
Even in the late Middle Ages theorists conceived the contemporary Holy Roman Empire not as unity but a sort of organised aggregate. One can recognize this both in metaphors used in and ceremonies prescribed by the Golden Bull of 1356. Whereas the nature of constituent parts of empire was defined in the Roman, Carolingian or late medieval periods in different ways (as well as, for example, in French and German synchronous coronation ceremonies), the idea of complexity mostly preserved.

This article is devoted to the important problem of the historical anthropology of Russia – a body of chief ruler from ancient time till now.

Thursday of May 24, 1912 was declared to be a public holiday (a day off) with the special decree of the Emperor Nikolay II. It was a unique thing in the history of Russia when a big principal town of province got a possibility to celebrate the event which had been 300 years ago. It had a fateful meaning in the struggle for Moscow against the Poles and in restoration of the statehood in Russia by election of M.Romanov to reign.

Ancient and modern periods are the only periods of the existence of republican constitution. The rest history is the history of monarchies, but even the ancient world gives us not only Greek democracy and Roman aristocratic republic, but Hellenistic monarchies and the Roman Empire.
Our topic is just the latter and its principles of succession. The transfer of power has always been a special and responsible process in the life of any political system, the successful transmission can be a force for stability and progress, on the contrary, a bad transition can lead to a serious crisis.

Fyodorov S. E. (PhD, Prof., St. Petersburg State University) e-mail: email@example.com, firstname.lastname@example.org The King’s absolute power in the context of the medieval political theology.
The paper reconstructs a European, almost medieval in its sense, intellectual background for exploring the growth of the early modern idea of absolute monarchy. The first part is seeking to unravel the skeins of argument, distinguishing two processes associated with so called theological and canon law discourses, while the next part of the paper suggests a way for their interaction within civil law consciences.
Emphasizing collision between theological and canon law discourses as a major tool to conceptualize the High Middle Ages understanding of “potestas absoluta” and “potestas ordinate”, the author shows how the latter became part of the Late Medieval and Early Modern political controversy.

The report reminds about the reasons why the Russian Orthodox Church has taken the decision to canonize the Emperor Nicholas II.
Author pays special attention to the spiritual life of the Emperor, giving vivid examples of his piety and spiritual influence on others. The superiority of sacrificial mood as realization of the supreme destination of the Tsar is underlined. Brief comments on the most common negative opinions about the personal qualities of Nicholas II as a governor are given to overthrow widely spread clichs. The significance of the most important administrative decisions of Nicholas II and especially the personal characteristics of the Tsar for the fortunes of the country in the early XX century and today are discussed.

The present paper deals with yet unexplored charter which is preserved in the Archives of the Saint-Petersburg Institute of History (RAS). It was bought by the academician N. Lichatchev from unknown person. The charter was composed in Sens and concerns the authentication of marital status of Henry III, the king of England and Johanna of Dammartin, the countess of Ponthieu and Aumale. The charter seems to have served as prototype of other charters which were investigated by D. L. D’Avray.
Whatever the case, it was evidently Henry III who had initiated the process to nullify his marriage. The process had place in Sens with the bishop of Hereford Peter of Aigueblanche and archbishop of York Walter de Gray as judges. Neither Henry III nor Johann was present during the lawsuit. Contrary to Johann Henry sent his representative (procurator) John Capelli. He and other persons witnessed that Henry and Johanna were relatives. The bishop of Hereford pronounced the marriage nullified and the possible tensions in future as to the legal status of Henry’s son Edward had been escaped.

Whereas Procopius’ often repeated assertion that the reign of Justin I was but a mere prelude to the age of his great successor Justinian has been refuted with good reason, one should not ignore the degree to which Justinian actually participated in state affairs. Stemming from a military background as an lite soldier of the imperial guard, Justinian certainly took the military tasks delegated to him more seriously than hitherto assumed. Having been court general for a period of five years, his installation as Caesar, granted by Justin in 525 AD, also brought him the supreme command of the Roman army. In this position, Justinian played a key rle in the operations against the Persians in 526 AD. In the report it is a question of perception of a monarchy and an king’s image in France of Hundred Years’ war. The conclusion is drawn that the monarchic consciousness of the medieval person is one of his main characteristics. Even in the most difficult situations it remained unshakable in that as for need of presence of an image of the king as natural attribute of public life. The dynasty could change, but the king and his family as a necessary factor of public hierarchy remained at the level of ordinary consciousness an embodiment of the ideal relations in a family. And maintenance of this image by already kings and their environment was important representative function of a monarchy during this period of history.

Analysis of the works of Baroness Dimsdale and Lady Rondeau of 1739 and 1779 describing their visits to Russia demonstrates their objective and unbiased character. Unlike “male” majority, their account on the country and Russian people weren’t negative. At the same time portraits of the Empresses made by English were genderly restricted.
The writers were more interested in the external, rather than the internal nature of things they faced, that was quite obvious for the fair sex of the period. At the same time, the authors of the stories appear as educated and distinguished ladies, that allows to make strong statements on the high intelligence of a women of the Enlightenment age.

Palamarchuk A. A. (PhD, assistant professor, St. Petersburg State University) e-mail: email@example.com Monarchy, Imperium, Jurisdiction: terminological aspects in the European legal writing of the Medieval and Early Modern period. P. 114-121.
In the late Eleventh century the school of glossators in Bologna rediscovered Corpus Juris Civilis for the Medieval Europe. The rich legacy of the Code enriched European legal writing with the rich terminology of power. The notions of “imperium” and “jurisdiction” were formed in the classical Antiquity and during the High Middle Ages and Early Modern period were more precisely conceptualized. “Jurisdiction”, originally meaning the certain volume of imperial, monarchial or administrative power, lately became a basic notion for structuring the inner legal and administrative organization of a realm. A model case for the use of “jurisdiction” in both meanings are writings of English Civilians and Common law judges of the Early Seventeenth century.

Perdiccas II, son of Alexander I, ruled in Macedonia for 40 years and went down in history as one of the brightest, most efficient and controversial kings of the Argead Dynasty. How reliable was Perdiccas as a political partner and did he keep pledge? What weight did the Macedonian king’s word carry? These are the issues dealt with in this article. Thucydides treats Perdiccas as a “behind-the-scenes master”.
Many a time does the historian say that the Macedonian king acted in secret (krypha) and as often as not against his yester allies. To keep his domain, Perdiccas would make treaties now with one, now with the other warring sides. It was through the King’s ‘vulpine nature’ that the Macedonians managed to evade the “traps” of mainstream politics in the game played by the Athenian arche and the Peloponnesian League throughout the second half of the 5th century BC. Perdiccas is the ruler “in the shadow of Olympus” and several decades later Macedonia would step out of the “shadow” and play its trump card in the big game on the world plane.

Schneidmller B. (Prof., Dr.,University of Heidelberg, Germany) e-mail: email@example.com The Idea of the Holy Roman Empire in Medieval Latin Europe. P. 58-64.
Models of empire usually combine ancient and modern archetypes. The imperium Romanum with its virtual hegemony in the civilized world and its self-consciousness as a power without borders framed the terminology and the theory of imperial rule throughout the centuries. Of course – modern empires seemed different. They evolved from the idea of nation and claimed agency by structuring their own world. Thus, the Romanov Empire marked a turning point. The persisting idea of a third Rome was merged with a rising power in the European texture of sovereign states.
Russia seemed to have preceded the national arrangement of European empires in the 19th century.
